 The castle was built by the Purcell clan, but then after more than 3 centuries as owners, the family was reduced to living as peasants in the castle stables after the property was confiscated by Cromwell and given to his officers. Most of the outer wall and some ancillary structures also survive, as well as a moat between the tower and the road.
