For Sale – Foulksrath Castle, Jenkinstown, Co. Kilkenny.

GVA Donal O Buachalla are presenting a rare opportunity to purchase a habitable 16th century castle in Co. Kilkenny, with the launch today of Foulksrath Castle for sale by private treaty.

The Foulksrath Castle Youth Hostel property in Jenkinstown, just south of Ballyragget (4km) and approximately 12km north of Kilkenny city is Ireland’s oldest youth hostel, having operated since 1948. Foulksrath Castle is a striking 16th century Norman House Tower, converted for use as a hostel and providing approximately 311 sq.m. (3,348 sq.ft.) of living accommodation over 5 floors, on a site of approximately 0.85 ha. (2.1 acres).

The castle was built by the Purcell clan, but then after more than 3 centuries as owners, the family was reduced to living as peasants in the castle stables after the property was confiscated by Cromwell and given to his officers. It retains many of its original medieval features, including a stone walled dining room, large fireplaces, bay windows and a stone spiral staircase leading to the upper floors. Most of the outer wall and some ancillary structures also survive, as well as a moat between the tower and the road.

The property is readily accessible, situated just off the N77 Durrow-Kilkenny road, less than 13km from the richly historic Kilkenny city, in a picturesque rural setting, amidst mature gardens. The property currently comprises a 52 bed hostel and offers exciting potential for conversion for a range of other uses, including private residential, guest house, visitor centre, retreat centre, restaurant/café, craft centre, etc. subject to planning permission.

GVA Donal O Buachalla are expecting keen interest in this unique property from owner-occupiers and investors, both in Ireland and overseas and they are seeking offers in the region of € 750,000.

The property is being sold by An Oige who intend to reinvest the proceeds within their remaining 28 hostels around the country.
